Adding Transitions

Once all of your images are in place in your production, click on the Play button in the Preview window to view the slideshow. Having no transitions between the slides is called Cuts. Cuts have their place in many productions, but to add a little different effect you can also add transitions between the images to show a connection from one to the next. There are several ways to add transitions; and you can experiment to find the method with which you are most comfortable.

One way is to drag and drop them from the Effects Selector's Transitions panel.

Click on the Effect Selector tab in the Docking area (alternately click on it in the Task Pane).

Click on the Transitions button, if it is not already selected. I think there are about 150 transitions in this panel, and it is fun to try them out and experiment. Just keep in mind that the images are what you want to showcase, not the transitions.

Click the drop-down arrow and select a Theme to view the transitions by category. Themes allow you some variation and flexibility within your production, while still maintaining a cohesive feel, since they are designed to complement each other.

Click on the right-pointing green arrow in the lower right corner of each transition to preview it. If you want one particular transition applied throughout the production, drag and drop it into place between two images, right click it, and select Apply Transition to All.

Some transitions, (for example, 3D transitions) will only be available in Hardware mode.

To determine if your PC is capable of rendering in Hardware mode:

Click on Tools > Options and in the top of the Options dialog box, click the Graphics Test button and let the test run. If your computer is capable of Hardware rendering, the radio button next to Hardware will be selected for you. If not, Software will be selected. It's not a good idea to try to override this setting to enable otherwise unavailable transitions. To avoid possible problems, you may want to set your computer to Software mode, regardless of the test results.

To add varied transitions as a Theme, click on Apply Transition Theme in the Task Pane's Add Content panel. Select one of the themes and click Yes when VideoWave asks if you want to Apply to All Transitions. This gives you random transitions from within that Theme. You can drag and drop them to other positions, delete and replace, or choose a different theme entirely.

To adjust the duration of a transition, click on the transition and change the durations setting in the Preview window.

You can also add transitions by clicking Add Transitions in the Add Content panel of the Task Pane. Select the transition and choose how you would like it inserted. This can be a big help if you decide you want to apply one particular transition throughout your entire project.

You can change how the transition displays by changing its settings. Select a transition and then click on the Settings tab in the Docking Area. Some have different settings, so play with them to find out what you like. Change the transitions all to dissolves by clicking on Apply Transitions Theme, click on Dissolves and clicking Yes.
